Former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, a seasoned politician who played a key role in shaping the state’s political landscape, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93. Krishna, who had been suffering from age-related ailments, died at his residence in Sadashivanagar after being hospitalized for a lung infection. He was receiving treatment at the ICU at Manipal Hospital before his death.
A Legacy Of Leadership And Contributions
SM Krishna, a prominent leader in Indian politics, is survived by his wife, Prema, and two daughters. His son-in-law, the late V.G. Siddhartha, founded Cafe Coffee Day. Krishna’s grandson married Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s daughter, and Krishna is regarded as Shivakumar’s godfather in politics.

Krishna was an influential figure, having served in various capacities, including as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, and as the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. His tenure as Chief Minister is particularly remembered for his emphasis on the development of the state’s IT and BT sectors, transforming Bengaluru into a major IT hub.
Political Leaders Mourn His Passing
Following Krishna’s death, several political leaders expressed their condolences. President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to Krishna, recognizing his long career in public life. “He earned people’s affection for his commitment to the development of the state,” she stated, offering heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sorrow, sharing that he cherished the many interactions he had with Krishna over the years. “Shri SM Krishna Ji was a remarkable leader, admired by people from all walks of life. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others, particularly through his focus on infrastructural development,” the Prime Minister said on social media.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also expressed his deep sorrow, calling Krishna’s service to the state and nation “unparalleled.” He emphasized Krishna’s contributions to Karnataka’s growth, particularly in the IT-BT sectors. “His vision, disciplined life, and scholarly nature are exemplary for aspiring politicians,” Siddaramaiah remarked.
Public Viewing And Final Rites
In accordance with the family’s wishes, Krishna’s mortal remains will be available for public viewing at his residence in Sadashivanagar throughout Tuesday. His final rites will be performed on Wednesday morning at his birthplace, Somanahalli in Maddur Taluk, Mandya district.
Political Journey And Impact
SM Krishna’s political career spanned several decades. He served as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President in 1999, leading the Congress party to a significant victory. He later became the Union Minister of External Affairs under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and played a crucial role in elevating India’s global diplomatic standing. In 2017, Krishna left the Congress party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though he maintained a low political profile thereafter. He announced his retirement from active politics in January 2023.
A Statesman Remembered
BJP State President BY Vijayendra also extended his condolences, remembering Krishna as a guiding force in the party. Krishna’s contributions, especially in the development of Bengaluru’s IT sector, earned him widespread respect.
Born in the village of Somanahalli in Maddur Taluk, Mandya district, Krishna’s educational journey took him from his hometown to prestigious institutions like Maharaja’s College, Mysuru, and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
SM Krishna’s passing marks the end of an era in Karnataka politics, leaving behind a lasting legacy of public service, statesmanship, and leadership.
