Veteran Journalist Rajat Sharma Files Defamation Case Against Congress Leaders

Renowned journalist Rajat Sharma has taken legal action against Congress leaders Ragini Nayak, Jairam Ramesh, and Pawan Khera, filing a defamation case in the Delhi High Court.

Case So Far:

This move comes in response to allegations made by the Congress leaders that Sharma used abusive language during a live television broadcast on the day of the Lok Sabha election results.

Sharma’s defamation suit seeks immediate relief, requesting the Delhi High Court to restrain the Congress leaders from further making defamatory statements against him.

Additionally, he has urged for the removal of related videos from social media platforms, emphasizing the detrimental impact of these allegations on his reputation.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna heard the interim application presented by Sharma and has reserved the order.

The court’s decision on restraining the Congress leaders from continuing with their allegations is pending.

The controversy erupted when Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak accused Rajat Sharma of using abusive language towards her during a live television program on 4 June, the day of the Lok Sabha election results.

Subsequently, Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera also commented on the matter, sparking further public debate.

Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, representing Rajat Sharma, strongly refuted the allegations during the court proceedings, asserting that they did not use any abusive language during the broadcast.

Singh argued that the accusations were baseless and aimed at tarnishing Sharma’s impeccable reputation as a veteran journalist.

Singh highlighted the timeline of events, noting that the allegations were not raised immediately after the broadcast but surfaced six days later.

He underscored the damaging nature of these accusations, particularly in the era of social media where misinformation can rapidly spread.

Responding to the allegations, Rajat Sharma addressed the public through a statement on 11 June, denouncing the claims as a deliberate effort to defame him.

He labeled the accusations as part of a larger conspiracy to malign his longstanding career and reputation in journalism.
