Florida Neuroscientist Warns Of Three Common Foods That Can Harm The Brain

A Florida neuroscientist has highlighted three common foods that could damage the brain, potentially shrinking it over time and affecting memory, focus, and sleep.

Robert Love, an expert in Alzheimer’s prevention, shared the warnings in an Instagram video on November 4, urging people to rethink their dietary choices for long-term brain health.

Love points out that seed oils, including peanut and canola oils, as well as other refined vegetable oils, can trigger inflammation, a key factor in brain degeneration. “Inflammation is really harmful to the brain. It’s one of the primary risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease,” he explains. He further warns against ultra-processed foods, which often contain these oils, making them particularly detrimental to cognitive health.

Refined Sugar and Brain Inflammation

The neuroscientist also advises limiting refined sugar intake. Unlike natural sugars found in fruits, concentrated sugars can spike insulin and blood glucose levels, leading to inflammation that damages brain cells.

Love stresses the benefits of consuming natural sources of sugar, such as organic fruits, which support brain function rather than impair it.

Alcohol consumption is another major concern. Love notes that nearly half of American adults over 21 regularly consume alcohol, exposing themselves to long-term brain risks.

He explains, “It impairs memory, disrupts sleep, and harms gut bacteria. What’s good for your gut is good for your brain. Damaging it can have lasting cognitive consequences.”

Experts emphasise that diet and lifestyle choices play a critical role in maintaining brain health. Reducing processed oils, refined sugars, and alcohol could help protect memory, sleep quality, and overall cognitive function.
