On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of a new “all-weather greenfield deepdraft major port” at Vadhavan, located approximately 130 kilometers from Mumbai.

The Vadhavan port project, estimated to cost Rs 76,200 crore, will be developed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL). VPPL is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). JNPA and MMB will hold a 74% and 26% stake in the project, respectively.

Key Details About the Vadhavan Port
According to the media reports, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change approved the project in February. This public-private partnership project is expected to become one of the world’s top ten ports upon completion. It will be developed in two phases, with the first phase set to be completed by 2030 and the second by 2039.
The port will feature a depth of 20 meters and will have a total capacity of 298 million metric tonnes (MMT) per annum, including around 23.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) for container handling. This capacity surpasses that of any other Indian port and is projected to double India’s container handling capability, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The Vadhavan port will include nine container terminals, each 1,000 meters in length, four multipurpose berths (including a coastal berth), four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) berth, and a Coast Guard berth. Seven of the container terminals will have an adjacent storage yard, while the remaining two will feature a storage area located approximately 1 kilometer behind the quay.

The port will be equipped to handle container ships with capacities exceeding 24,000 TEUs. Its location benefits from a natural draft of 20 meters, which is advantageous for accommodating larger vessels with minimal dredging requirements. This feature not only reduces maintenance and operational costs but also enhances the port’s overall efficiency, as noted by Vaishnaw in an interview with The Print.
The project will involve reclaiming 1,448 hectares of sea area and constructing 10.14 kilometers of offshore breakwater and cargo storage facilities.

The Vadhavan port will play a pivotal role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC), reinforcing its significance in regional and global trade networks.
