Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the Winter Char Dham Yatra at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for religious tourism and economic growth in the state. This historic move allows the Char Dham Yatra to continue year-round, extending the pilgrimage season even during the traditionally off-peak winter months.
The ceremony commenced with traditional prayers and rituals, officially launching the year-round pilgrimage. During his two-day visit to Rudraprayag district, CM Dhami addressed a long-standing demand to make the Char Dham Yatra accessible throughout the year.

Historically, the pilgrimage would pause in winter as the Himalayan shrines were inaccessible due to heavy snow. However, with this new initiative, the winter abodes of the deities at Omkareshwar Temple, Kedarnath, and other designated locations in Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri will now accommodate pilgrims year-round.
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Dhami emphasized the significance of the initiative: “The Winter Char Dham Yatra is a major step towards establishing Uttarakhand as a year-round pilgrimage destination. We are ensuring all necessary arrangements for the success of this initiative, which will not only boost the state’s religious significance but also provide sustained livelihood opportunities for local communities.”
The Winter Char Dham Yatra is expected to attract pilgrims from across India and abroad, boosting tourism and supporting the state’s economy during the off-season.
The event saw participation from local leaders, including Rudraprayag MLA Bharat Singh Chaudhary, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, and BKTC (Badri-Kedar Temple Committee) President Ajendra Ajay. The launch also included temple priests and local residents.
This initiative aims to balance tradition, spirituality, and economic sustainability, reinforcing Uttarakhand’s identity as Devbhoomi, or the Land of Gods.
