The Government of India, in a gesture of respect and pride, sent a high-level delegation to the Vatican, led by Union Minister George Kurien, to attend the ceremony.

The Indian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) shared the moment on the social media platform X.com, expressing the significance of the event. “It is a matter of great pride for India that Archbishop George Koovakad will be made a cardinal by the revered Pope Francis,” the PMO captioned the photo of the Pope with the Indian delegation. The ceremony was preceded by a meeting between the Indian officials and Pope Francis.

In a tweet ahead of the ceremony, Pope Francis shared his reflections on the role of faith in fostering unity and justice. “The heart of Christ is openness, gift and meeting. In Christ we learn to relate to one another in a good and happy way, so that we can establish the Kingdom of God on earth, of love and justice.
