The Uttar Pradesh assembly has passed a bill to prevent ‘love jihad’. The law will now be stricter in cases of conversion done by deception or force throughout the entire state. This law includes a provision for severe punishment for the culprits.
UP will stop incidents of illegal conversion
For the first time, the government will punish the culprits of ‘love jihad’, where someone harasses a woman living in Uttar Pradesh by trapping her and converting her. The punishment will be life imprisonment. To prevent serious incidents of illegal conversion, the government has increased the scope of the law and extended the period of punishment.
On the first day of the monsoon session in the UP Legislative Assembly, legislators introduced and passed the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion (Amendment) Bill-2024.
What is the ‘Love Jihad Prevention’ Bill?
Under this bill, if any person threatens, attacks, marries, promises to marry, or conspires to marry someone for his life or property with the intention of conversion, or traffics a minor, woman, or any person, his crime will fall into the most serious category.
The punishment provisions include a minimum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or life imprisonment and a fine. The court will determine the amount as a fine for the cost of treatment and rehabilitation of the victim.
In cases of conversion, anyone can now register an FIR. Previously, only the person suffering from conversion, their relatives, or close relatives could register an FIR.
