JN.1 COVID
Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad recently reported its first case of the JN.1 strain of COVID. A 35-year-old doctor, associated with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, tested positive after visiting relatives in Vaishali on January 1. Since the doctor was in Ghaziabad when the test results emerged, Delhi authorities cross-notified the case.
UP’s Inaugural JN.1 Case Of COVID Strain
This marks the state’s first encounter with the JN.1 variant. Following genome testing confirming the new strain, Lucknow’s health directorate received information from Delhi, alerting health officials in Ghaziabad. Subsequently, the doctor’s two Vaishali-based relatives, whom she visited the previous week, underwent testing after Monday’s alert. Fortunately, their results came back negative for COVID-19 by Tuesday.
The city’s most recent COVID case before this incident involved a 34-year-old woman on January 2. Currently, there are three active cases in Ghaziabad.
As cited by media reports, RK Singh, the district surveillance officer stated, “This is the first JN.1 strain detected in Ghaziabad. Once we received information from the health directorate, immediate testing was conducted on her relatives in Vaishali, both of whom tested negative.” “As a precautionary measure, hospitals have been instructed to test individuals displaying symptoms of fever, cold, or flu,” he added.
Medical Efforts Recommends Caution
Medical experts have advised vigilance for symptoms such as sore throat, headache, and lethargy, often associated with the JN.1 strain. They recommend consistent monitoring of body temperature and oxygen saturation for those experiencing these symptoms, recommending prompt testing.
Additionally, the health department has introduced two helplines (9910426374 and 8826797248) for reporting any Covid cases within the city.
India’s First JN.1 Case
India’s inaugural JN.1 sub-variant of COVID-19 was identified in Kerala during routine surveillance conducted by INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium). The case was traced in an RT-PCR-positive sample from Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram district on December 8.
