The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department’s ‘Homestay’ scheme has emerged as a valuable initiative during the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, offering pilgrims a comfortable stay while providing locals with an additional source of income.
With an estimated 40 crore devotees expected, the Maha Kumbh eventually saw over 66 crore visitors taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam.
As hotels, guest houses, and tent city accommodations filled up, the ‘Homestay’ scheme proved to be an essential alternative for lodging.
According to Aparajita Singh, Regional Tourism Officer of Prayagraj, 112 homes were converted into ‘Homestay’, primarily in areas like Jhunsi and Daraganj, which are close to the Maha Kumbh site.
This initiative allowed devotees to experience a homely environment at reasonable rates, making it a more affordable option compared to hotels and luxury tent accommodations.
Local homeowners benefited significantly from the initiative.

Ajay Kumar Ojha, a resident of Hewett Road, converted five rooms of his house into a ‘Homestay’, accommodating 145 guests over the 45-day festival.
Likewise, Akhand Pratap Singh from Jhunsi transformed his four-room flat into a ‘Homestay’ and hosted 120 families, turning down several more requests due to high demand.
In total, over 35,000 pilgrims found accommodation through the ‘Homestay’ scheme, easing pressure on the city’s hospitality sector while generating income for local residents.
