Authorities from the Uttar Pradesh drug department have confiscated a substantial quantity of medications and injections due to suspicions of irregularities. The individual involved is a Nigerian national residing in Greater Noida. He had intentions to send these items to his country, as reported by officials on Thursday.
The items that were seized comprise 20 diverse types of drugs, encompassing anti-cancer and blood-enhancing injections. To ascertain whether these products are adulterated, samples have been extracted and will undergo testing. A senior official from the drug department conveyed this information.
The seizure took place on Wednesday and targeted the Nigerian national, who asserted that he had obtained a prescription for the medications. These drugs were procured from Bhagirath Palace in Delhi, and the relevant invoices from the drug suppliers are being requested to substantiate the claims. The drugs themselves, along with the corresponding bills, are presently being examined for verification, as elucidated by Gautam Buddh Nagar Drug Inspector Vaibhav Babbar in a statement to PTI.
The invoices were issued in the names of different individuals. However, the quantities of drugs acquired greatly exceeded the prescribed amounts. For instance, if a patient required two injections, the individual procured 200 injections. Similarly, if a prescription called for four tablets, a purchase of four hundred tablets was recorded. This disparity was highlighted by the officer.
Babbar indicated that there was a suspicion that these medications might have been intended for sale in Nigeria. The seizure was carried out to validate the legality of the export process and to assess the quality of the drugs.
No arrests have been made, nor has a police FIR been filed in connection with the case. Any legal measures will be taken subsequent to the receipt of the drug test report by the drug department, Babbar affirmed.
The Nigerian national from whom the drugs were confiscated resides in Sector Gamma 1 of Greater Noida.
This incident involving the drug seizure transpired several months after the Uttar Pradesh government revoked the license of Marion Biotech, a Noida-based company. This action was taken after their cough syrup was believed to have caused the deaths of numerous children in Uzbekistan.
