India took a significant step in climate science with the inauguration of its first climate change station in the Himalayan region.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated the station on Tuesday at Mandlote village in Chenani Tehsil of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district.
The Central University of Jammu established the Himalayan High Altitude Atmospheric and Climate Research Center.
The centre will focus on studying atmospheric and climatic changes specific to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said this is India’s first climate change station in the Himalayas and the world’s second.
He added that the station will play a key role in tracking climate change, especially in high-altitude regions sensitive to global warming.
“Landed at Nathatop in Udhampur for the launch of India’s first-ever and the world’s second climate change station in the Himalayan region. Warmly received by senior officials of the Centre, UT government, and local residents,” Singh shared in a post on the social media platform X.

Boost To Climate Research And Policy
The research centre is expected to generate crucial scientific data to guide national and regional climate policies.
It will facilitate in-depth analysis of environmental changes such as glacial melt and air quality in high-altitude areas.
Satish Sharma, Jammu and Kashmir’s Minister of Science and Technology, also attended the inauguration ceremony.
He emphasized that the center marks a new chapter in India’s commitment to combating climate change.
Local Participation And Global Significance
The inauguration saw active participation from locals, researchers, and officials, highlighting the importance of integrating science with grassroots awareness.
With this launch, India strengthens its position in global climate action. This will also highlight the Himalayan region as a crucial area for research and environmental monitoring.
