A 25-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after allegedly falling into an uncovered pit in Delhi’s Janakpuri area on Thursday night. Police have identified the deceased as Kamal Dhyani, who was returning home when the incident occurred.
Dhyani’s brother alleged that the family searched through the night after he failed to reach home and received no meaningful assistance despite approaching multiple police stations. He claimed the family learnt about the death only the following morning, when a police official answered calls made to Dhyani’s mobile phone.
“When I last talked to him, he said he would reach home in 10 minutes. When I called him again at 12:30 AM, he didn’t pick up. We got worried. We started looking for him. I first went to his office in Rohini, then to the Janakpuri police station. The police gave us his last location in this area. We kept looking for him but couldn’t find him. This is gross carelessness,” he stated.
Dhyani’s brother further added, “My brother was not crazy that he would deliberately crash into the pit. At 1:30 AM, I checked this pit, but he was not there at that time. We visited at least 6 police stations but did not receive any help. In the morning, when I again called my brother’s phone number, the police picked up the call and informed us that his body had been recovered from the pit. Had the police got into action on time, my brother would have been alive.”
Friends of the deceased also expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of urgency.
One friend stated that the police asked them to wait until morning to formally register a complaint and shared only a broad search radius instead of precise location details.
Despite a group of seven people searching the area for several hours overnight, no trace of Kamal was found. His motorcycle also could not be located during the search.
His friend questioned why the authorities could not track the mobile phone accurately during the night. He added that search teams had checked the pit earlier but found no sign of the victim.
DCP West Sharad Bhaskar confirmed that the Delhi Jal Board had dug the pit as part of its work. He said Kamal’s motorcycle had fallen into the excavation.
DCP Sharad Bhaskar said the authorities will investigate all agencies involved in the project. He also said the police are registering an FIR and are working to retrieve the vehicle.
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood visited the site and assured strict action against any Delhi Jal Board official found guilty of ignoring safety norms.
The Delhi Jal Board expressed condolences, formed a committee to investigate the incident, and said it would take strict action if the inquiry establishes negligence.
BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri also demanded accountability and said authorities cannot tolerate such lapses in the national capital.
