Uddhav Thackeray Warned Against “Godhra Like Incident” Followed By Ram Mandir Inauguration

Godhra incident popularly known as ‘Godhra Kaand’ lead to death of at least 58 people. It took place in February month of 2002 as some coaches of the Sabarmati Express were set on fire at Gujarat’s Godhra Railway Station.

The most awaited inauguration of the decade is going to happen in January month of 2024. Ram Mandir will be inaugurated in the first month of coming year. Prior to the inauguration, an alerting remark has come up from Uddhav Thackeray, the former CM of Mahaashtra. Uddhav Thackeray has warned of a ‘Godhra-like’ conspiracy in the name of Ram Mandir. The remark came in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections that is to happen in the same year as the inauguration. The inauguration is to take place in Uttar
Pradesh. It will be inaugurated by crowd comprising thousands of Hindus.

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad has sharply criticized Mr. Thackeray’s claim. The claim said that Bharatiya Janata Party, in power at the federal level, is to blame for the Ram temple movement. He reminded his former ally that Balasaheb Thackeray, the late founder of the Shiv Sena, had “blessed” the Ram temple movement and said he would “pray to Lord Ram for wisdom (to the opposition leader)”. Anurag Thakur, a minister in the Union, and Pramod Sawant, the chief minister of Goa, both criticized Mr. Thackeray’s comment.

At an event in Jalgaon, Uddhav Thackeray referred to a “possibility that many Hindus will be called from all over the country in buses and trains… and, while returning from there, a Godhra incident can be carried out somewhere on the way”.

“This can happen… attack can happen. In some colony they will burn buses, throw stones… massacres will take place. The country will be on fire again… and they will bake their political bread on these flames,” the Shiv Sena UBT leader declared.

Godhra Incident

For those who don’t know, Godhra incident popularly known as ‘Godhra Kaand’  lead to death of at least 58 people. It took place in February month of 2002 as some coaches of the Sabarmati Express were set on fire at Gujarat’s Godhra Railway Station.

Nine years after the killings, a local court found 31 persons guilty (63 were later freed) of inciting riots and protests. The Supreme Court is currently considering appeals against the conviction, which was upheld by the Gujarat High Court.

The temple will be inaugurated months before the 2024 general election, in which the BJP, which has supported the construction of the temple, will seek an unprecedented third term in power. The temple is being built on land that has been claimed by both Hindus and Muslims but was awarded to the former by the Supreme Court in 2019, in a landmark decision.
