The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday criticized the BJP’s “shameless propaganda” surrounding the RG Kar rape-murder case. The party strongly denied allegations that the victim’s parents were offered a bribe to remain silent.
Response to Bribery Allegations
The TMC’s statement comes after the victim’s parents alleged that Kolkata Police had offered them money on the day their daughter died. However, during a press conference, TMC shared a video recorded last month. In it, the father of the trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered on August 9, dismissed the bribery claims.
“These are baseless rumors. We never said the police tried to bribe us. This is a blatant lie. I urge everyone to stop spreading such rumors and instead focus on getting justice for our daughter,” he said in the video.

TMC Criticizes BJP’s Political Motives
TMC leader and minister Shashi Panja accused the BJP of politicizing the tragic incident for their own gain. “BJP is not interested in seeking justice. Their actions are hurting the sentiments of the victim’s parents,” Panja said.
She also condemned the circulation of what she called “fake” videos on social media, which she alleged were spread by the BJP’s IT cell. Panja emphasized that the victim’s parents want justice without political interference.
Parents’ Earlier Allegations
On Wednesday, the parents had accused the police of attempting to cover up the case from the start. “The police tried to hush up the case from the beginning. We weren’t allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while it was sent for a post-mortem,” the father said during a protest in Kolkata.
While they did not provide details on why the money was allegedly offered, their comments intensified the political debate surrounding the case.
TMC Dismisses Bribery Claims
The Trinamool Congress firmly rejected the accusations, blaming the BJP and the media for spreading misinformation. “The victim’s parents themselves debunked these lies. BJP is exploiting this tragedy to push their agenda,” the party said.
