Tragic Suicide Of Kerala Doctor: Wedding Cancelled Amidst BMW And Gold Dowry Demands
A tragic incident unfolded in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where a 26-year-old doctor, Dr. Shahana, allegedly died by suicide. The State Health Minister, Veena George, has initiated a probe into the matter. Dr. Shahana, pursuing a postgraduate course at the Government Medical College, reportedly took this extreme step after her boyfriend declined to marry her. It is alleged that the refusal was linked to her family’s inability to fulfill dowry demands.
A case has been registered against the boyfriend under abetment to suicide charges and dowry prevention laws, with his detention reported by news agency PTI. Dr. Shahana, residing with her mother and siblings following her father’s demise two years ago, was in a relationship with Dr. EA Ruwais, planning to marry him.

Tragically, the family claims that Dr. Ruwais’ family demanded an exorbitant dowry, including 150 gold sovereigns, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car. Unable to meet these demands, Dr. Shahana’s family asserts that the wedding was called off, deeply affecting the young doctor. A suicide note found at her residence read, “Everyone wants money only.”
In response to the disturbing situation, the State Women and Child Development department has been tasked with providing a report on the dowry allegations. The State Minority Commission, led by AA Rasheed, has scheduled a meeting on December 14, summoning the district collector, city police commissioner, and director of medical education to submit a comprehensive report.

Additionally, P Sathidevi, the State Women’s Commission chairperson, visited Dr. Shahana’s family to express condolences. She emphasized the need for decisive action if the alleged mental agony induced by dowry demands played a role in the young doctor’s tragic decision. The incident underscores the critical need for addressing dowry-related issues and promoting mental well-being in society.
