Tragic Multi-Vehicle Pile-Up On Delhi-Agra Expressway Claims 13 Lives

Mathura witnessed a tragic escalation as the Delhi-Agra Expressway accident claimed 13 lives, up from an earlier report of four, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Dense fog shrouded the expressway in the early hours, causing seven buses and three cars to collide in a massive pile-up. Flames engulfed several vehicles immediately after the crash, leaving passengers trapped and prompting chaos at the site.

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed the development, stating that the fire completely charred eight buses, including a state-run bus, and also burned two cars.

“A total of 70 people were injured in this incident and have been admitted to different hospitals. Two of the injured have been referred to Agra Medical College for advanced treatment. The entire medical team has completed the examination. Here at the mortuary, we received information about the deaths of 13 people,” the District Magistrate told the reporters.

Earlier, Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar confirmed four fatalities and 25 injuries, reflecting the rapid escalation of casualties as rescue operations continued.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and announced immediate financial assistance, providing Rs 2 lakh to each bereaved family and Rs 50,000 to those injured.

Authorities emphasised ongoing support for victims and their families during recovery.

Similar Crash Raises Safety Concerns

The incident occurred just a day after a similar multi-vehicle crash on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which claimed four lives, including two police personnel, and left around 15–20 seriously injured.

Experts attributed the earlier crash to extremely low visibility caused by thick fog, underscoring the persistent risks posed by winter weather on highways.

Officials highlighted the dangers of driving in fog, particularly on high-speed expressways where visibility can deteriorate rapidly.

The events stress the importance of stricter safety protocols, speed restrictions, and timely warnings during hazardous conditions to prevent further tragedies.

Authorities in Mathura and along other major highways pledged enhanced monitoring during fog-prone periods, while emergency services continue to assess vehicle safety standards and response efficiency.

The government aims to minimise similar accidents and safeguard travellers during the winter season.

Recent incidents on the Delhi-Agra and Delhi-Mumbai expressways prompted renewed attention to road safety regulations, emergency preparedness, and public awareness campaigns.

Officials hope that stricter enforcement and preventive measures will reduce winter road casualties and ensure safer journeys for commuters.
