New Delhi: Tragedy struck in North-East Delhi’s Welcome area in the early hours of Thursday (March 21) as two jeans factory workers lost their lives while another sustained injuries in a building collapse. The incident occurred on the ground floor of a two-storey building where all three employees were engaged in their duties.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Joy Tirkey provided details of the incident, stating, “A call reporting the collapse of a two-storey, old under-construction building was received at 2:16 am.” He clarified that the first floor of the building was unoccupied, while the ground floor was utilized for jeans cutting.
An official revealed, “Three labourers were trapped under the debris and subsequently rescued. They were rushed to GTB Hospital, where unfortunately two of them were pronounced dead.” The deceased individuals have been identified as Arshad (30 years) and Tauhid (20 years), while the injured worker, Rehan (22 years), is currently receiving medical attention at GTB Hospital. The building owner, identified as Shahid, is being sought, and legal actions will be pursued against him.
Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Station Officer Anoop Singh recounted the rescue operation, stating, “Upon receiving the information, we promptly initiated rescue efforts, deploying four fire brigade vehicles to the scene.” He described the scene upon arrival, mentioning the collapsed building and the trapped individuals who were successfully evacuated and transported to the hospital.

Local councillor Haji Zarif, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, commended the coordinated efforts of the fire brigade and Delhi Police in conducting the rescue operation. He confirmed that all three trapped individuals were rescued with the assistance of the fire brigade and promptly transported to the hospital.
Shoaib Jamui, another leader from AIMIM residing near the building, visited the site in the morning. Expressing a non-political stance on the matter, he emphasized the need for accountability and justice for the victims of the tragic incident.
