A tragic incident unfolded in Junagadh, Gujarat, on July 24, where a two-storey building collapsed, resulting in the fear that many individuals might be trapped inside. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams promptly reached the site, and search and rescue operations are currently underway. According to officials, four persons are suspected to be trapped under the debris.
The collapsed building, which was in a dilapidated state, consisted of both shops and residential units and was situated in the Kadiawad locality. To facilitate the rescue efforts, bulldozers were deployed to remove the debris, and ambulances were on standby at the site.
This unfortunate incident comes just a few days after Junagadh city experienced torrential rains, resulting in severe waterlogging in various areas. The city recorded 241 mm rainfall in a 24-hour period ending at 6 am on Sunday, causing significant damage, including submerged cars and the loss of cattle due to flash floods.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in certain districts of Saurashtra, including Porbandar and Dwarka. Similarly, Anand, Bharuch, and Surat districts in the Gujarat region, as well as Jamnagar and Kutch districts in Saurashtra-Kutch, are also expected to experience heavy rains.
Junagadh’s Collector, Anil Ranavasiya, stated that the water had receded from the city after the rain subsided. Around 200 people were rescued, while 750 individuals were shifted from low-lying areas in the city. Additionally, 2,220 people were relocated to safer places in rural areas neighbouring the city as a preventive measure. Efforts to restore electricity were nearly complete, and food packets were being distributed to those residing in shelters.
As the search and rescue operations continue in Junagadh, the authorities are diligently working to provide assistance and support to those affected by the building collapse and the recent heavy rainfall.
