Heavy rains in Telangana have caused significant disruptions, particularly along the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway. On September 1, traffic came to a standstill as floodwaters submerged a section of National Highway 65 near Suryapet. As a result, authorities redirected vehicles heading from Hyderabad to Vijayawada through alternative routes via Narketpally, Addanki, and Khammam.
NH-65 is a vital road link between Hyderabad and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, passing through the unified Nalgonda district.
Since Saturday, the Nalgonda and Suryapet districts have experienced relentless rainfall, leading to the inundation of low-lying areas and the severing of road links to several villages.
In particular, water from overflowing tanks and lakes has flooded residential areas in the Huzurnagar and Kodad constituencies. Moreover, rainwater has entered homes in Miryalguda, located in the Nalgonda district.

The situation in Kodad has been particularly dire, with heavy rains wreaking havoc. Tragically, two individuals were swept away by floodwaters. One of the victims, identified as Ravi, was discovered dead in a car that had been washed away in a stream. In another incident, Venkateshwarlu, a teacher riding a motorcycle, was also swept away on Saturday night. His body was found the following day.
Furthermore, traffic has been halted from Uppal to Medipally in the Medchal Malkajgiri district on the outskirts of Hyderabad due to the highway being submerged by rainwater.
Additionally, the compound wall of Gandhi Bhavan, the Congress party’s state headquarters in Hyderabad’s Nampally area, collapsed because of the heavy rains. While several cars parked near the wall sustained damage, fortunately, no injuries were reported.
As heavy rains continue to lash various parts of Telangana, the meteorological office has issued a red alert for 11 districts. The department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations over the next 24 hours.
In response to the escalating situation, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy held an emergency meeting to review the developments and has urged residents to stay indoors for their safety.
