Veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has turned to a classic cartoon by legendary Indian artist RK Laxman to voice his frustration over a recent police summons related to a social media post.
Roy shared the cartoon on his official X account, humorously depicting a policeman dragging a youth through the street, with bystanders watching.
The caption of the cartoon, originally published on December 26, 1962, reads, “Of course, you weren’t spreading rumours – the charge is you were spreading facts!”
Accompanying the cartoon, Roy posted a grinning emoji, signaling his amusement and defiance.
The cartoon comments on the summons he received from Kolkata Police over a post about the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
Earlier this month, Roy had publicly called for the custodial interrogation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal in connection with the ongoing investigation into the case.
Following this, Kolkata Police issued two notices requesting Roy’s presence for questioning over allegations of spreading misinformation, which led Roy to delete the contentious post.
In response to the police action, Roy sought protection from the Calcutta High Court against potential coercive measures, including arrest.
During a court hearing on 20 August, Roy’s legal team informed the court that he had complied by removing the post from his X handle.
Consequently, the West Bengal government’s counsel assured that no further action would be taken against him.
The situation remains dynamic, and it will be interesting to observe the police’s response to Roy’s latest social media activity, which continues to challenge the authorities in a unique manner.
