TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya Withdraws Bail Plea in Money Laundering Case

In a significant development surrounding the ongoing money laundering case linked to the teacher recruitment scandal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Manik Bhattacharya has opted to withdraw his bail plea from the Supreme Court. Bhattacharya, a prominent figure within the political landscape of West Bengal, sought permission from the apex court to retract his bail petition, a request that was granted by the judicial body.

The decision to withdraw the bail plea comes in the wake of the Kolkata High Court’s rejection of Bhattacharya’s initial appeal for bail. Following this setback, Bhattacharya had escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking reprieve from the charges leveled against him in connection to the alleged scam.

A bench headed by Justice Bela M Trivedi acknowledged Bhattacharya’s withdrawal of the bail plea and conveyed to the Calcutta High Court that it could soon reconsider the matter on its merits. The Supreme Court emphasized that the Kolkata High Court possesses the authority to reassess the bail plea in accordance with the law.

Furthermore, Bhattacharya also petitioned the Supreme Court to present additional documents pertinent to his case before the Kolkata High Court, indicating a concerted effort to bolster his defense in the ongoing legal proceedings.

During a previous hearing, the court had underscored the gravity of the matter under investigation, noting the involvement of numerous victims and Bhattacharya’s influential stature. The court highlighted Bhattacharya’s extensive resources, administrative position within the state, and unblemished educational background, factors that warranted thorough examination in the legal process.
