A minor clash broke out between supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party outside a counting centre in Biddhannagar, located in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said on Sunday.
According to officials, tensions began on Saturday night near the strongroom following a dispute between workers of the two parties.
The situation escalated as slogan-shouting from both sides turned into a confrontation.
Central forces and local police quickly reached the spot to control the situation, dispersing the crowd and separating the rival groups. Barricades were later installed to prevent further escalation.
The BJP alleged that the dispute began after Trinamool workers placed party flags at a camp set up outside the counting centre.
In response, the Trinamool Congress accused central forces of using a lathi-charge against its supporters.
Despite the allegations from both sides, authorities confirmed that the situation was brought under control without further escalation.
Security has been intensified in and around the strongroom and across all counting centres in the state.
The administration has imposed a ban on fireworks and victory processions near counting venues.
Counting of votes for 293 Assembly constituencies will take place on Monday across 77 centres in West Bengal.
Counting will not be held in the Falta constituency of South 24 Parganas district, where the Election Commission of India ordered a repoll in all booths following reports of serious electoral violations during the second phase of polling on April 29.
Mamata Banerjee instructed party counting agents to remain vigilant. She told them to seek recounts in close contests. She also asked them to stay near the counting centres to ensure timely access on the counting day.
