Two non-local workers lost their lives after terrorists opened fire at a brick kiln in Kellam village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday evening.
The victims, Deepak from Chhattisgarh and Bhupinder from Uttar Pradesh, sustained critical injuries during the attack.
Authorities rushed both workers to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Anantnag for specialised treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, both men succumbed to their injuries.
Security forces immediately sealed the area and launched an extensive search operation to trace the terrorists.
Senior officers from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reached the site to supervise the operation.
Officials said further details are awaited.
The attack comes amid intensified counter-terror operations across the Kashmir Valley following recent incidents of terrorist violence.
Last week, terrorists killed Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi while he was deployed for Amarnath Yatra security duty in Anantnag.
Officials noted that after 2019, terrorist groups increasingly adopted hybrid tactics and targeted vulnerable civilians instead of high-profile individuals.
Migrant labourers, roadside traders and truck drivers from outside Jammu and Kashmir have repeatedly faced attacks aimed at disrupting economic activity and integration.
In October 2024, terrorists attacked a construction camp at Gagangeer in Ganderbal district, killing several non-local engineers and workers.
Following such incidents, security agencies strengthened surveillance around major transit routes, infrastructure projects and workplaces employing migrant labourers.
Security forces continue the search operation in Kulgam to identify and apprehend those responsible for Friday’s attack.
