Police detained Bihar Assembly Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday as he participated in the RJD’s ‘Lok Bhavan March’ in Patna.
The opposition party organised the rally to highlight concerns surrounding students, unemployment and the alleged AK-47 firing during a student demonstration in Siwan.
The situation became tense at Dak Bungalow Crossing when protesters tried to move past the barricades erected by police.
Authorities deployed water cannons after the demonstrators pushed ahead and attempted to continue their march.
RJD workers brought a large AK-47-shaped cutout to the protest as they highlighted the alleged firing incident involving students in Siwan.
The RJD’s National Working President accused the state government of ordering the police action against the protesters. He said the authorities could not silence the movement by attempting to stop the demonstration.
RJD Lok Sabha MP Misa Bharti took part in the demonstration. She questioned the authority behind the alleged deployment of an AK-47 during the student protest.
The RJD’s protest came alongside a separate student demonstration in Patna over the BPSC TRE-4 recruitment examination.
Candidates have objected to the inclusion of negative marking in both the preliminary and main examinations despite the release of the recruitment advertisement.
The protesters have called for the government to withdraw the negative-marking provision.
Patna Traffic Police introduced restrictions around Dak Bungalow Crossing as authorities prepared for the large demonstration.
Officials diverted commuters travelling from Patna Junction and the railway station towards the crossing and advised them to choose alternative routes.
The confrontation has added to political tensions in Bihar, with the RJD using student grievances, unemployment, recruitment policies and the Siwan firing controversy to intensify its criticism of the state government.
