Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday commenced his first official visit to New Delhi since assuming office earlier this month, marking a significant political and administrative step for the newly formed coalition government in the state.
Vijay, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections, formed the government with the backing of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, creating Tamil Nadu’s first coalition administration in several decades.
The Chief Minister travelled to the national capital for a two-day visit to strengthen coordination with the Centre and secure greater financial and developmental support for Tamil Nadu.
According to official sources, the visit includes meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union Ministers and prominent Congress leaders.
The Chief Minister will submit a memorandum seeking Central support for the Chennai Metro Rail expansion, pending GST compensation dues, PMSRI educational funds and the release of Tamil Nadu’s share under various schemes. He will also request adequate fertiliser supplies for the upcoming kharif season.
Vijay is likely to raise the issue of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and seek the Centre’s intervention in Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu reservoir project.
During the visit, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will inaugurate a statue of Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar at JNU. He is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan, Amit Shah and Nirmala Sitharaman.
