Symbols Of Slavery Have No Place In Independent India, Says Dr Dinesh Sharma

Former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Dinesh Sharma has said that symbols of slavery have no place in independent India, asserting that the country should not continue to accept them 79 years after Independence. He said the nation’s brave warriors did not sacrifice their lives so that symbols associated with invaders would continue to be revered.

Raising the matter in the Rajya Sabha as a matter of special importance, Dr Dinesh Sharma said that several countries have removed symbols linked to their periods of subjugation. He cited Poland and the Baltic nations, saying they had removed Soviet-era symbols from public spaces.

Dr Dinesh Sharma also said China had erased symbols associated with Japanese invaders and teaches Japan as an aggressor in its educational curriculum. He said that, in contrast, roads in the national capital, Delhi, continue to bear the names of invaders such as Babur and Akbar.

The Rajya Sabha MP further stated that the use of the term ‘My Lord’ in the judicial system reflects a colonial mindset.

Dr Dinesh Sharma said that New India should free itself from such remnants of colonial and invader-era influences. He called for the formation of a national commission to review colonial symbols and obsolete laws.

The Rajya Sabha MP proposed that school curricula and museums should present invaders as invaders rather than rulers. He urged removing the names of invaders from monuments and replacing them with the names of national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country.
