PM Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Nepal’s first woman interim Prime Minister, calling it a landmark moment for women’s empowerment.
Addressing a massive gathering at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal, PM Modi emphasised India’s steadfast commitment to the peace, stability, and prosperity of its close neighbour.
PM Modi Congratulates Nepal’s First Woman Prime Minister
PM Modi conveyed his best wishes on behalf of 140 crore Indians to Sushila Karki, 73, who took oath as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister on Friday night.
He called her elevation a ‘shining example of women’s empowerment’, likening it to the role of Manipuri women.
PM Modi said he was confident Nepal would move toward peace, stability, and progress after the recent youth-led protests.
“Democracy will be further strengthened in Nepal,” he said, adding that India firmly supports the democratic aspirations of the Nepali people.
The Prime Minister underscored the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties between India and Nepal. He reminded the gathering that India has consistently stood by Nepal during its transitional phases.
He praised the resilience of Nepali citizens. The Prime Minister lauded young men and women for voluntarily cleaning and painting public buildings amid political turmoil.
PM Modi applauded the people of Nepal for upholding democratic values despite recent turbulence.
“I want to thank the people of Nepal who, even in difficult days, have kept democracy as their ultimate goal,” he said, drawing applause.
He reiterated India’s commitment to walk alongside Nepal, stressing, “We want both nations to move forward together.”
Sushila Karki’s Appointment Follows Political Turmoil
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki assumed charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister after President Ramchandra Paudel swore her in.
Her appointment followed days of political upheaval and mass protests. The fall of the KP Sharma Oli government, after a nationwide agitation over a social media ban, triggered the unrest.
President Paudel, Nepal’s top military generals, and youth leaders who spearheaded the protests chose Karki after consultations.
Her leadership is a historic first in Nepal, raising hopes for stability.
