Supreme Court Warns Centre In Coast Guard Case, Says “If You Can’t, We Will…”

The next hearing was scheduled by the court for March 1. A female Coast Guard officer has filed the petition in this case. For qualified female officers joining the force under a short service commission, it requests a permanent commission. The Attorney General has maintained that the Army and Navy are not the same as the Coast Guard.

The Center was brought up during the matter’s prior hearing on February 19. It was then that the Chief Justice had questioned why there was an “indifference” about the Coast Guard. “What makes you oppose women serving in the Coast Guard? Women are capable of policing the beaches as well as the borders. “You mention Nari Shakti, present it here,” he had uttered.

The “patriarchal” mentality that opposed the enlistment of women in the force had been questioned by the court. “There are women in the Navy; what makes the Coast Guard unique?” The entire canvas will be made available. The Chief Justice had declared, “The days of saying women couldn’t join the Coast Guard are long gone.”

Priyanka Tyagi, the petitioner, had previously filed a case with the Delhi High Court but was not granted relief. She cited the Supreme Court’s rulings on women’s permanent commissions in the Army and Navy in her petition.
