The Supreme Court of India will announce a crucial decision  whether to allow sub-classification within Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud will lead the seven-judge Constitution Bench, which includes Justices B.R. Gavai, Vikram Nath, Bela M. Trivedi, Pankaj Mithal, Manoj Mishra, and Satish Chandra Sharma.

The bench will address two main issues: whether the law can permit sub-classification within SC and ST categories, and whether state assemblies have the power to introduce such sub-classifications.

This ruling could significantly impact affirmative action policies and the socio-political landscape in India. The court’s decision will determine if different groups within SC and ST categories can receive varying levels of benefits or reservations.

Legal experts, policymakers, and social organizations are closely monitoring the case. The outcome will clarify legal ambiguities and set a precedent for future legislation and judicial reviews on the issue.
