On Thursday, the Supreme Court scheduled a hearing for Friday to address a petition requesting the rescheduling of the NEET-PG 2024 exam, currently set for 11 August.
The decision follows an urgent plea submitted by advocate Anas Tanwir, representing the petitioners.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the bench, instructed the court registry to prioritize the matter for Friday’s session.
The petitioners argue that the allocation of exam cities is inconvenient and that the normalization formula for the four sets of question papers remains undisclosed.
The petition highlights concerns that discrepancies between batches could lead to unequal examination conditions.
“With the exam split into two batches, there is a risk that one group might face a tougher set of questions than the other,” the petition asserts. “It is essential that the normalization formula made public to prevent any perceived unfairness.”
The petition highlights the logistical challenges students faced, noting that the test city allocations finalized on 31 July, with specific centers announced only on 8 August.
This limited timeframe, coupled with the high demand for travel arrangements, has however created difficulties for students.
“Over two lakh students are expected to take the exam across 185 cities. The rush for train tickets and rising airfares are making travel arrangements nearly impossible,” the petition states.
Previously, the Union Health Ministry had postponed the NEET-PG exam from its original 23 June date to ensure the integrity of the examination process, citing concerns over the robustness of the examination protocols.
The Supreme Court had rejected similar petitions for postponement of the NEET-PG 2023 exam last year, making this upcoming hearing particularly significant.
