On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging the interim stay imposed by the Delhi High Court on his bail in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged liquor policy scam.
According to the supplementary causelist released on the apex court’s website, a vacation bench comprising Justices Manoj Misra and SVN Bhatti will take up the matter today at noon.
Kejriwal’s legal team had urgently requested the apex court for a hearing on his plea after the Delhi High Court’s order halted his release.
On 21 June, a bench of Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja of the Delhi High Court stayed Kejriwal’s release on bail following an application by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), challenging the lower court’s decision granting bail.
The high court instructed to withhold the enforcement of the bail order until the matter undergoes a full hearing. The court reserved its decision on the matter the same day with an assurance to deliver its verdict within two to three days.
Prior to this, the trial court had denied ED’s plea for a 48-hour deferment in signing Kejriwal’s bail bond after granting him bail.
The case pertains to allegations of money laundering linked to an alleged liquor policy scam, and has drawn significant attention due to Kejriwal’s prominent role in Indian politics as the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The Supreme Court’s hearing is anticipated to clarify the legal status of Kejriwal’s bail amidst the ongoing legal tussle between the prosecution and defense.
