The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a plea contesting the Jharkhand High Court’s decision to grant bail to JMM leader Hemant Soren in a money laundering case related to a purported land scam. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear this plea on Monday.
The petition will be heard on July 29 by a bench consisting of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, according to the causelist posted on the supreme court’s website.
On June 28, the Jharkhand High Court had granted Soren regular bail, subject to a few restrictions. In an appeal to the supreme court, the ED has requested special leave in order to have Soren’s bail revoked.

On July 4, just one week after being released from prison, Soren took the oath of office as the third Chief Minister of Jharkhand. After being taken into custody by the ED on January 31, he was freed on bond after serving five months in prison.
The Supreme Court turned down Soren’s appeal to stay out of his ED arrest earlier in May. It had chastised the JMM leader for advocating for “parallel proceedings,” noting that the plea deal submitted to the Supreme Court omitted the fact that the special court had granted the prosecution’s (ED) complaint cognizance.
Since the petitioner did not approach the highest court with clean hands, it dismissed the plea, raising major concerns about the hiding of facts.
