The Supreme Court has dismissed the review petition filed by Kajal Kumari and others regarding the NEET UG 2024 exam. The petition sought a re-examination, alleging a paper leak and systemic malpractice. However, the court, led by a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra, ruled that the existing evidence does not warrant a re-test.
The court also rejected a request for an open-court hearing, stating it is not possible to order a re-examination based on the available material.
In its August 2 decision, the Supreme Court acknowledged that a paper leak occurred in NEET UG 2024 in Hazaribagh and Patna. However, the court noted that there is no evidence of any broader malpractice compromising the exam’s integrity.
The court expanded the scope of an existing committee, led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, tasked with evaluating the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) examination processes and recommending reforms. This seven-member committee now has a broader mandate to review the NTA’s conduct of NEET UG and ensure future exam integrity.
The Supreme Court directed the NTA to address all issues flagged by the court in its decision. The committee, formed by the Center, will consider these concerns in its recommendations for examination reforms. Over 23 lakh candidates appeared in NEET UG 2024, held on May 5, seeking admission to medical courses such as MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH.
This ruling underscores the court’s commitment to exam integrity while dismissing insufficient evidence for systemic malpractice in NEET UG 2024.
