The Delhi government’s lawsuit contesting the recently passed law by Parliament regarding control over services in the national capital was today granted permission by the Supreme Court to be amended.
The top court took note of senior attorney Abhishek Singhvi’s arguments on behalf of the Delhi government that the challenge was originally made against the ordinance, which has since been approved by Parliament and becomes legislation.
The petition’s revision was approved by a bench presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud after the Centre stated that it had no objections. The bench gave the center four weeks to submit its response to the modified plea.
Despite a contentious debate in the House and an attempt by the Opposition to block it, the Parliament recently approved the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2023, also known as the Delhi Services Bill, paving the way for the Centre’s proposed legislation on the postings and transfers of bureaucrats in the national capital.
Prior to this, a five-judge constitution bench had been assigned to hear the challenge to the ordinance over services.

The bill gives the city administration less authority over services and sparks a new power struggle between the two centers of influence.
