A sudden and intense spell of rain lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) around 7 PM on Wednesday, triggering widespread waterlogging and massive traffic snarls.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded with an orange alert, warning of continued rainfall and storm activity through the evening.
The downpour hit several eastern parts of the capital first, with moderate to heavy showers spreading quickly across the region.
Roads turned into streams within minutes, and key intersections saw severe congestion.
The IMD advisory noted that the rain-bearing system was moving eastward and expected to bring moderate rain across most of Delhi-NCR.
Isolated pockets, however, may experience heavy downpours over the next two hours.
Authorities flagged a high risk of localised flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Underpasses in vulnerable zones may be temporarily closed as water levels rise.
Traffic flow on major roads slowed drastically, with long tailbacks reported in several parts of the city.
IMD urged residents to stay indoors
The IMD cautioned that reduced visibility on waterlogged roads and slippery conditions could increase the risk of accidents.
Motorists faced difficult conditions as vehicles stalled and emergency services scrambled to respond.
Officials warned that outdoor business activity and daily routines would be affected.
The rain could also damage standing crops, plantations, and horticultural assets, especially in peri-urban and semi-rural areas.
Informal settlements and weak structures may suffer partial damage from gusty winds and rain seepage.
The IMD urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary. They advised people to secure doors and windows and avoid sheltering under trees due to lightning risk.
Civic bodies were asked to remain on high alert and ensure a rapid response to emergencies.
Despite the disruption, the city saw some relief from the heat. The maximum temperature was expected to settle around 35°C, while the minimum hovered near 24°C.
The IMD forecast moderate rain with light thunderstorms and lightning to continue overnight.
The weather agency asked citizens to keep monitoring official updates and follow safety protocols.
As Delhi-NCR grapples with sudden weather changes, city authorities remain on edge, preparing for further rainfall and its cascading effects on infrastructure and daily life.
