Communal tension erupted in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday night during a Ganesh idol procession. The procession was attacked with stones, injuring three and sparking unrest in Pratima village.

This incident occurred around 10:00 PM as the procession moved through Pathani village towards a local village for immersion, where an unidentified group of people allegedly began to attack with stones.

The three injured individuals were rushed to the district hospital. This triggered a strong standoff as crowds from both communities gathered at the very same spot.

Police and administrative officials, including Additional Collector Veer Singh Chouhan and Additional Superintendent Antar Singh Kanesh, immediately intervened, deploying heavy and massive security and conducting a flag march to restore order and calm down the citizens.

Authorities declared the area a prohibited zone while investigating the CCTV to see who was responsible for this chaos.

Moreover, Burhanpur MLA Archana Chitnis, who remained on site until Monday, appealed to residents to maintain peace and not fall prey to any anti-social elements, stressing that the district traditionally celebrated festivals in harmony.

She recalled that a similar incident had also previously taken place during the immersion of Ganesh idols. Further, she demanded strict action against the unidentified group of people.

While officials confirm everything is ‘under control’, and police continue to guard against further escalation.
