Steel: The Backbone Of A Rising India, Says PM Modi

PM Narendra Modi on Monday underlined the vital role of India’s steel sector in driving the country’s infrastructure and economic progress.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s office referred to the sector as the ‘backbone of a rising India’ and praised policy innovations and reforms for transforming it into a global force.

From infrastructure and defence to electric mobility and clean energy, steel is the backbone of a rising India. Union Minister Shri @hd_kumaraswamy outlines how policy push and innovation are shaping India’s journey to becoming a global steel leader,” the tweet read.

PM Modi applauds steel sector’s impact

Sharing a post by Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Prime Minister Modi noted that steel plays a pivotal role across key sectors, including infrastructure, defence, electric mobility, and clean energy.

“From infrastructure and defence to electric mobility and clean energy, steel is the backbone of a rising India,” PM Modi posted.

India rises as global steel powerhouse

Steel Minister Kumaraswamy echoed the sentiment, asserting that a revitalised steel sector is helping shape the rise of a ‘New India’. He highlighted its applications in highways, high-speed rail, metro systems, renewable energy parks, electric vehicles, and defence.

Under PM Modi’s leadership, India has, however, emerged as the world’s second-largest steel producer.

Steel production has increased significantly from just over 81 million tonnes in 2014 to more than 152 million tonnes today.

The nation is now on track to meet its 2030 target of 300 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

Kumaraswamy credited major policy interventions, such as the Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products Policy and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, for boosting capacity, encouraging self-reliance, and driving innovation in green steel technologies.

“These visionary reforms have empowered MSMEs and core industries, strengthened domestic production, and positioned India as a steel-exporting nation,” he said.

Steel powers self-reliant India vision

In a media article, Kumaraswamy stated that steel is no longer just a metal but a symbol of India’s resilience and self-reliance.

“This is Atmanirbhar Bharat in action,” he wrote, adding that steel lies at the very foundation of the country’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse.

“Today, India exports quality steel, builds with its strength, and continues to witness rising domestic demand—unlike any other major economy,” the minister concluded.
