Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has been brought to Shillong under heavy police guard. She is scheduled to be presented before the court on Wednesday.
Currently, she is in the custody of Meghalaya Police on a three-day transit remand.
Raghuvanshi surrendered to police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on 7 June. From there, she was taken by road to Patna, flown to Kolkata, and then to Guwahati.
Upon her arrival at Guwahati airport, she was discreetly moved through the cargo gate. She was then taken to the Sadar police station in Shillong, following a mandatory medical check at Ganesh Das Hospital. Additionally, she spent the night in police custody.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that six days of transit remand were secured for the accused arrested in Madhya Pradesh. He added that three days were secured for those from Uttar Pradesh.
“All accused are being brought to Shillong separately and will be produced in court,” he said.
Four others — Raj Kushwaha, allegedly Sonam’s lover and the key conspirator, along with Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan — have also arrived in Shillong. They will remain in police custody until their court hearing.
Tension flared at Indore airport as the four were being escorted by police.
A bystander, angered by the nature of the crime, slapped one of the accused, who was masked. The individual’s identity remains unknown.
Case timeline
Sonam and Raja were married on 11 May. They left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on 20 May with only a one-way ticket. By 23 May, both had gone missing.
A widespread search operation followed, and on 4 June, Raja’s body was found in a deep gorge — a discovery that shocked the nation.
Sonam’s arrest marked a major development in ‘Operation Honeymoon’ — a special 20-member task force initiative launched to track down those involved in the murder.
All five accused are now under Meghalaya Police custody for further investigation.
