Sita Soren Joins BJP
Sita Soren, a legislator from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and sister-in-law of former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, made headlines on Tuesday as she announced her decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Her move came shortly after tendering her resignation from the JMM, citing neglect and isolation within the party.
Joined by BJP’s national general secretary Vinod Tawde and Jharkhand poll in-charge Laxmikant Bajpai at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, Sita Soren’s decision is perceived as a significant boost for the BJP’s outreach to the scheduled tribes, a crucial voting bloc traditionally aligned with the JMM.
In her resignation letter addressed to the party’s leader and her father-in-law, Shibu Soren, Sita Soren expressed grievances stemming from what she perceived as inadequate support following her husband Durga Soren’s demise. Feeling neglected and disillusioned, she cited this as the primary reason for her departure from the JMM.
Furthermore, Sita Soren voiced concerns about the party’s alleged deviation from its core values, accusing it of accommodating individuals whose principles diverged from its ethos. She hinted at a conspiracy against her and her family, ultimately leading to her decision to resign from the party.
When approached for comment, JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharyya confirmed awareness of Sita Soren’s resignation but noted that the official letter had not yet reached him.

Sita Soren’s defection comes at a crucial juncture, with the Lok Sabha elections on the horizon. In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured 11 seats with a commanding 51.9% vote share, while other parties such as the Congress, JMM, and ASJU managed to win one seat each.
With the upcoming elections scheduled from April 19 to June 1 and vote counting set for June 4, Sita Soren’s move to the BJP adds an intriguing dimension to the political landscape in Jharkhand.
