Amit Shah says the Modi government is ready for a special Parliament session to debate SIR and challenges Congress to participate.

SIR Debate: Amit Shah Challenges Congress, Offers Special Parliament Session

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that the Narendra Modi government was ready to hold an extensive discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, including during a special session of Parliament.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav, Shah challenged Congress and Rahul Gandhi to participate in a meaningful debate instead of disrupting parliamentary proceedings or organising mock Parliament sessions. He said the government was willing to convene a special session to discuss the issue.

“If you have the courage, come forward and engage in a proper debate. Simply carrying a copy of the Constitution does not equate to upholding it — one’s conduct must be constitutional,” Shah said.

Shah accused Congress of paralysing Parliament and urged the party to allow proceedings to continue so that people could determine who was presenting facts and who was spreading misinformation.

The Home Minister said democratic discussions should take place within Parliament rather than through parallel platforms or street demonstrations. He reiterated that the government was open to scrutiny and had no objection to a detailed discussion on SIR and other concerns raised by the Opposition.

Shah’s remarks come amid Opposition protests over the electoral roll revision and allegations of widespread voter deletions.

The Home Minister maintained that constitutional principles required more than symbolic gestures, stressing the importance of respecting the Constitution through conduct. He said a proper parliamentary debate would allow the public to assess the arguments presented by both sides.

Shah’s statement renewed the challenge to Congress and other Opposition parties, which have demanded discussions on electoral issues while facing allegations of disrupting parliamentary proceedings.
