Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang following the tragic collapse at the under-construction NHPC Teesta Stage VI hydropower project tunnel in Namchi district, assuring the state of all possible assistance from the Centre as rescue operations continued.
During the conversation, the Prime Minister enquired about the situation at the tunnel in Samardung, Jholungey, and reviewed the ongoing rescue efforts.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, PM Modi conveyed his sympathies to the affected workers and their families while assuring the state government of full Central support for rescue and relief measures.
The tragedy has claimed at least seven lives, while efforts remain underway to locate and rescue the remaining trapped workers.
Rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing by multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), district administration, Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, medical teams from Rangpo Primary Health Centre and local volunteers.
Specialised rescue teams from Pakyong and Siliguri have also joined the operation.
Chief Minister Tamang thanked Prime Minister Modi for his prompt intervention and continued support, stating that the Centre’s assurance had strengthened the state administration as rescue personnel worked under extremely challenging conditions.
The Chief Minister said he was closely monitoring the rescue mission and had directed all departments to speed up operations, assist affected families and ensure safety. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, praised the rescue teams for their dedication and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
The Sikkim government reaffirmed its commitment to a safe rescue operation and support for the affected families.
