Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant Apologizes For ‘Maal’ Remark On Shaina NC Amid Political Uproar

‘I never intended to insult Shaina or any woman. I have never used objectionable words against any sister or mother. Since my comment created misunderstandings, I apologize,’ Sawant told reporters

Arvind Sawant

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant on Saturday apologized for his controversial reference to BJP candidate Shaina Nana Chudasama, also known as Shaina NC, as “maal.” The comment, made at a campaign event in Mumbai, sparked a major backlash across Maharashtra. Sawant, 72, stressed he meant no disrespect and emphasized his long-standing rapport with Shaina, 52.

“I never intended to insult Shaina or any woman. I have never used objectionable words against any sister or mother. Since my comment created misunderstandings, I apologize,” Sawant told reporters. He also pointed to alleged offensive remarks from leaders like Ashish Shelar and Sanjay Rathod, questioning why no action was taken against them.

Shaina Lodges Police Complaint, Reacts Sharply

Shaina NC, outraged by the remark, filed a complaint at Nagpada Police Station. The Maharashtra State Commission of Women also directed the police to take action. Shaina condemned Sawant’s comment, saying, “I am a daughter of Mumbai, working here for 20 years. I am a ‘mahila,’ not a ‘maal.’”

Shaina criticized Sawant for his remark despite previously winning with BJP support, expressing confidence that Mumbadevi voters would hold him accountable.

Sawant Attempts Damage Control as Backlash Grows

Under fire, Sawant claimed his remark was misinterpreted, explaining that “maal” meant “goods” without any derogatory intent. The Mahayuti coalition continued to criticize him, heightening tensions between Shiv Sena (UBT) and BJP allies as election season heats up.
