Satya Niketan Building Collapse: 6 Dead, 11 Rescued As Overnight Rescue Operation Continues

Six people have died, and 11 have been rescued after a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, officials said.

Rescue teams continued operations through the night as several people, mostly students, were feared trapped under the debris.

During the overnight rescue effort, one more person was pulled from the rubble but was found dead, taking the death toll to six.

Officials said teams were continuing their search for survivors and working to safely evacuate anyone still trapped.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse of the boys’ paying guest accommodation after inspecting the site on Sunday. She directed officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ordered the registration of an FIR against the building owner.

CM Gupta said those responsible for the tragedy would face strict legal action.

Following her directions, Delhi Police registered an FIR at the South Campus police station against alleged owner Hariram and others. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel confirmed the registration of the case.

The building was around 40–50 years old and comprised a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as PG accommodation for students, many of whom were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus.

Police said the premises could accommodate around 40 people.

The structure collapsed at around 01:30 PM while repair work was reportedly taking place in the basement.

Officials have, however, indicated that heavy rainfall may have contributed to the collapse.

The rescue operation involves personnel from Delhi Police, the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

Teams remain engaged in clearing the debris and searching for those who may still be trapped.
