Samajwadi Party Leader Azam Khan Released From Sitapur Jail After Nearly Two Years

Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh Minister Mohammad Azam Khan was released from Sitapur jail on Tuesday, ending a 23-month incarceration.

His initial failure to pay fines of Rs 8,000 in two separate cases briefly delays his release, and his lawyer, Sadnam Singh, later clears the amount in court.

Following verification, Khan walks free amid tight security and restrictions under Section 144 to prevent crowding near the jail.

Authorities enforce prohibitory orders in Sitapur city, with police using loudspeakers to disperse crowds and fining vehicles near the jail.

Despite the restrictions, a large number of SP workers, leaders, and supporters gather to welcome Khan.

Sitapur Circle Officer Vinayak Bhosle stresses that due to narrow city roads and Navratri festivities, the public must comply with Section 144, and officials continue dispersing crowds.

SP district president Chhatrapal Singh Yadav coordinates preparations to receive the senior leader, saying, “We have come to welcome him. He is our leader. His arrival will strengthen the party even more.”

SP MLA Anil Kumar Verma adds, “After a long time, the legal proceedings have concluded. We thank the court for this.”

Legal Proceedings & Bail

Azam Khan secures bail from the Allahabad High Court on September 18 in the Quality Bar land grab case, following an FIR lodged at Rampur’s Civil Lines police station.

Earlier, on September 10, he received bail in another case linked to the alleged forced eviction of residents from Dungarpur colony in Rampur.

A special MP-MLA court also acquitted Khan in a 17-year-old case concerning a road blockade and damage to public property. Authorities have registered as many as 16 FIRs against him over the years for various charges.

The release of Azam Khan marks a notable moment for the SP in Uttar Pradesh, as leaders and supporters express hope that his return will reinvigorate the party ahead of upcoming political activities.
