Residents of Delhi’s Janakpuri area have raised serious concerns over safety lapses after a 25-year-old biker lost his life after falling into an open pit at an ongoing Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project site.
The incident occurred late on Thursday night, highlighting what locals describe as gross negligence and a lack of basic safety measures.
The deceased, identified as Kamal Dhyani, a resident of Kailashpuri, was returning home from his office in Rohini. He was reportedly on his way to celebrate his parents’ wedding anniversary when the accident occurred.
According to a friend, Kamal had spoken to him shortly before the incident and said he was just 15 minutes away from home.
Locals said the pit remained uncovered, poorly barricaded, and lacked warning lights or signage.
A resident added that poor lighting made the area unsafe and prevented commuters from spotting hazards at night.
When Kamal did not return home, his family and police teams searched for him overnight but found no leads despite checking CCTV footage and mobile tower data.
Police recovered his body from a nearly 15-foot-deep pit around 8 am on Friday after a woman alerted them, with his motorcycle found nearby.
Residents accused the DJB of negligence, claiming the site posed a serious danger to road users.
Delhi Police denied allegations of inaction, stating that officers remained in constant touch with the family throughout the night.
Reacting to the incident, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma termed the death ‘tragic’ and announced strict action, including suspensions and a detailed probe.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with residents demanding accountability and stricter enforcement of safety norms at construction sites to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
