Official sources on Wednesday confirmed that the security detail of External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has been reinforced with the addition of two bullet-resistant vehicles to his convoy.
This enhancement follows a recent review of his ‘Z’ category protection, conducted by central intelligence agencies in response to rising regional tensions.
The move comes amid heightened security concerns after the India-Pakistan military escalation and India’s strong diplomatic response to Pakistan following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, which claimed 26 lives.
In light of these developments, intelligence agencies reassessed the threat perception for Jaishankar and recommended bolstering his security.

As India’s top diplomat, Jaishankar has led international discussions on ‘Operation Sindoor,’ directed India’s military response to the attack, and played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s foreign policy during the ongoing crisis.
The latest security enhancement follows a previous upgrade in October 2024, when Jaishankar’s protection, raised from the ‘Y’ category to the more stringent ‘Z’ category, the second-highest level in the central VIP protection system.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is responsible for providing armed cover to those under this protection tier, including around 200 high-profile individuals such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and prominent Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The central VIP security system includes several categories, with Z-plus being the highest and most elite level of protection.
