S Jaishankar Holds Talks With Israel, Australia FMs On West Asia Tensions, Strait Of Hormuz

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in high-level telephonic consultations with Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, addressing the deteriorating security environment in West Asia and strategic concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Taking to X, Jaishankar posted, “Had a telecon this afternoon with Israel FM @gidonsaar. Our discussion covered different aspects of the West Asia situation.”

Sa’ar affirmed that a resolute United States position in negotiations remains essential to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, stressing conditions such as zero enrichment and removal of enriched stockpiles.

A good conversation, as always, with my friend, India’s Minister of External Affairs @DrSJaishankar. We discussed Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, and Lebanon,” he posted.

The Strait of Hormuz continues to serve as a critical maritime artery, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and carrying nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies. These deliberations unfolded amid escalating regional tensions following the failure of US-Iran negotiations to reach a consensus.

Earlier, a temporary ceasefire was agreed on April 8, followed by hostilities triggered by joint US-Israel strikes in Iran, which reportedly killed former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military officials, prompting retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Iran across the region.

EAM Jaishankar also noted on X his exchange with Australian counterpart Senator Penny Wong, stating, “Appreciated the exchange of views today with @SenatorWong of Australia on the West Asia conflict.”

Broader Diplomatic Outreach

India has intensified diplomatic coordination, maintaining close contact with regional governments and global partners.

EAM Jaishankar recently conferred with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on regional developments and the welfare of Indian nationals.

During his April 11-12 visit to the United Arab Emirates, he met President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, conveying greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressing gratitude for the protection of the Indian community. He also interacted with Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and held discussions with Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

India continues to prioritise regional stability, maritime security, and the protection of its citizens abroad through proactive diplomacy.
