India’s Pharma Sector Shifting From Generics To Innovation Hub, Says PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday pointed out that India’s pharmaceutical sector is progressing beyond its reputation as the ‘pharmacy of the world’ and is gradually establishing itself as a hub for innovation. He stressed the increasing importance of research-oriented growth in the industry.

Referring to recent developments, the Prime Minister observed that the country is shifting from its traditional strength in producing affordable medicines to focusing on innovation and high-value drug development. He also shared an article authored by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, which examines this transformation.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister’s Office posted, “From the “pharmacy of the world” to a hub of innovation, India’s pharma sector is moving up the value chain. Under the present government, the focus has been on extensive R&D, biologics, biosimilars and cutting-edge therapies.”

“A must-read retrospection by Union Minister Shri @JPNadda on how India is preparing to lead the global race in this sector!” the post read.

The article outlines how consistent government initiatives and policy backing have contributed to reshaping the trajectory of the pharma sector in recent years. It further explains that India is moving beyond its dependence on large-scale generic drug production and is increasingly investing in sophisticated research and complex drug development.

This shift aligns with a broader objective to encourage innovation-led expansion.

Biologics Drive Growth

The sector is increasingly prioritising biologics and biosimilars, which will drive future growth in the global pharmaceutical market.

Highlighting the industry’s transition, Nadda stated, “While we are known as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’ for our strength in generics, the focus is now shifting towards innovation.”

With continued emphasis on research, innovation, and advanced technologies, India is likely to strengthen its global standing in the pharmaceutical sector while ensuring sustainable long-term development.
