Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Rs 10,000 crore SME Growth Fund, calling it a significant step towards strengthening the MSME sector and developing the next generation of Indian business leaders.

In a post on X, PM Modi said the initiative would give SMEs a platform to expand their operations, adopt advanced technologies, increase manufacturing capacity and enter international markets. He added that the fund would help Indian businesses integrate with global value chains.

Under the initiative, the Centre will commit Rs 10,000 crore to an Alternative Investment Fund that will provide long-term growth equity to promising small and medium enterprises with strong potential to scale.

A significant portion of the investment will support manufacturing enterprises, including businesses operating in industrial clusters across Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

The funding will likely help companies modernise technology, increase production and make strategic investments.

The initiative is to address the shortage of long-term risk capital faced by businesses seeking rapid expansion.

Such funding can support technological upgrades, capacity enhancement, overseas expansion and strategic acquisitions.

SMEs play a major role in employment generation, manufacturing, exports and innovation.

The government expects the new fund to build a stronger pipeline of businesses with greater scale and international competitiveness.

Investment in enterprises across smaller cities and industrial hubs could further strengthen local supply chains, improve productivity and support high-quality employment.

The SME Growth Fund is therefore aimed at giving high-potential Indian businesses access to patient capital while supporting manufacturing growth, technological advancement and greater participation in global markets.
