Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, has ignited a sharp political confrontation in Bihar by directly attacking the state government’s women-centric welfare architecture. She asserted that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s celebrated schemes, from cash incentives to the much-touted bicycle program, fail to penetrate the deeper structural inequalities that define the lives of women in Bihar.
She argued in unequivocal terms that offering Rs 10,000 to girls or distributing bicycles may provide symbolic relief but does not shake the rigid societal foundations that restrict women’s autonomy.
Rohini insisted that Bihar must go beyond cosmetic welfare and confront entrenched patriarchy head-on. She stated that without transforming regressive social norms, no scheme can truly empower women or ensure they receive the respect and opportunities they deserve.
Her remarks have unsettled political observers because they challenge not only Nitish Kumar’s governance model but also touch upon the complex legacy of her father, Lalu Prasad Yadav. With Tejashwi Yadav carrying forward that political inheritance, Rohini’s critique has introduced an unexpected, sharper dimension into Bihar’s political narrative.
Rohini also advanced a provocative proposal: institutionalising the right to one’s maternal home. She asserted that every daughter must grow up with the assurance that her maternal home will remain a permanent sanctuary, free of guilt, stigma, or judgment.

She highlighted that in Bihar, as in many Indian states, society still perceives a married woman’s return to her maternal home as an act of defiance. This stigma, she argued, often traps women in abusive relationships or emotionally suffocating environments.
By reframing the maternal home as an unconditional refuge, Rohini positioned this right as both a social shield and a structural reform necessary to protect women from exploitation, domestic violence, and psychological distress. She said that safeguarding this right is far more than a bureaucratic duty; it is an ethical mandate that the state must honour.
Her intervention has sparked intense debate across Bihar’s political spectrum, unsettling long-standing assumptions about women’s empowerment. Many analysts view her commentary as a direct message to Nitish Kumar, urging him to prioritise concrete, rights-based reforms over symbolic initiatives.
Rohini Acharya concluded by stressing that the government must shoulder the responsibility of ensuring daughters’ equality, especially when families and society fail to stand by them. She underscored that defending women’s dignity and rights is not an administrative formality but a profound moral responsibility.
